Why I’m Becoming A Guinea Pig

I’m becoming a guinea pig!

I know, I know… I have really bad headlines for my articles but hey, if you’re interested in my stuff you are still going to come and check out what’s new right?

So allow me to say what the heck do I mean by why I’m becoming a guinea pig next.

I’ve said this dozens of times before…

You can’t teach something you do not know how to do yourself first and for all those blind people leading the blind out there, this includes making money online.

To make money online there’s a ton of different assets you will need to have in place and I’m not talking about assets in the form of:

  • websites
  • software
  • products
  • money
  • time
  • etc

Not any of the above, I’m talking about your mindset.

I’ve always believed that in order to be the best you can at something, you have to be in awesome mental shape first.

See that I said “mental”. I don’t necessarily mean you need to be in great “physical” condition for you to be successful, I think it does help but it’s definitely not a “must have”.

Why Am I Becoming My Own “Guinea Pig”?

In my constant search for improving my own persona for the best, I joined a local gym the last week and I’ve been object myself of my own experiments, hence why I’m becoming some sort of a “guinea pig”.

If you have been following me for a while, you’d know by now that I love running and in case you’re wondering why the heck do I even do it, it’s because:

  • I love it
  • it makes me feel good
  • it helps me solve problems
  • it relaxes my brain and
  • it keeps me healthy!

In case you just started getting to know me, well I love running so now you know.

Joining The Gym

So fast forward to the gym thing, I gave them a call last Thursday and asked about the fees, they said I could pay a full year in advance and get a 50% discount (talk about marketing) so I visited them the next day.

The clerk asked me if I wanted more information to which I just said “I want to cut to the chase and join already, brief me on the gym later” and so we did all the paperwork and I was IN.

Note: I honestly had enough about over thinking everything lately so nowadays I just act and find out if it was a good or bad choice once it’s taken and not before (Ready, Fire, Aim)

Nutriologist Visit

The next Monday I went to see a nutriologist as part of the gym service, she gave me this diet plan (which I didn’t like btw) and I was absolutely ready for my first day at the gym on Tuesday.

I also realised I actually eat pretty healthy stuff so I won’t go into diet details here.

First Day At The Gym

Tuesday came, I woke up at 5:50am, got ready in about 15 minutes and off I go to the gym!

I felt like a kid in his first kindergarten day and I honestly felt a bit nervous too. As soon as I entered the gym the first words I said were:

“I’m new, this is my first day and I’d like to talk to an instructor”.

So an old lady took me to this guy right in front of everyone (I felt like a total idiot at this point) and so I was just left with some senior dude.

I quickly introduced myself to make the whole situation a little less awkward, coach didn’t say a word and just took a quick look back at me (like thinking “oh shit, not another newbie!”) and asked me “what do you want to do?”.

I said I wanted to build some muscles, lose fat and gain more strenght and endurance (if possible) so this guy mentioned all the other things I could do there that included spinning, boxing, crossfit, etcetera to what I just said “I want to lift weights” since I got the idea he didn’t want to help me at all.

To make a long story short, in the end this guy ended up telling me what to do so I worked out biceps, triceps and deltoids using the lightest dumbbells I could find (when I finally was done I noticed those weren’t the smaller ones) and went home with a big smile.

Second Day At The Gym

Woke up at 5:50am again and as soon as I started rushing out of bed I noticed an insane pain in my arms, I couldn’t stretch them all the way so after a few laughs at myself (in pain) I managed to get ready and off I go to the gym again.

I told the coach my arms were in pain, he laughed at me and said it was because I’m not used to work those muscles, I didn’t laugh this time (I kind of got enough laughs at me the prior day so I wasn’t in the mood for more abuse) and just asked “okay so what do we do now then?”

“Legs” he answered so I started working on some machines made to work out your legs with his previous indications.

Needless to say, there were a LOT of girls in this section and I was told to use some machines which I always thought were exclusively made for woman only (I still think that).

I got some stares like “what the heck is this guy doing here?” so I just decided to put my “I have no idea what I’m doing” face and got out of there as quick as I could. To this point, I think the coach was trolling me so I just rolled with his “recommendations” and didn’t ask any questions.

The pain on my legs was intense but I could bare with most of it and completed every single exercise to the “T”.

When I finally was done with everything, coach asked me to do 80 crunches, I made a funny face like “are you kidding me?” and he said “Okay, do as many as you can” so I said screw it then, I started and did 100 crunches in a row then I did about 50 reps on the second set and I called it a day.

I think I did that many reps because I was already warmed up and also ran for about 20 minutes before starting the day so everything went smooth to this point and I was pretty happy about it again.

Third Day: Hell Begins

I was supposed to be at the gym on Thursday but I had to take my girlfriend to the airport since she’s having her bachelorette party as I write this. I felt incredibly sore in my legs and arms but I still managed to get out of bed and walk around like a human being.

I took her to the airport, came back to the apartment and I had the plan of attending the gym in the afternoon but then something happened…

I noticed my leg movement got “diminished” and by diminished I mean, I could barely move my legs.

After a lot of self massage I managed to start walking around again in the afternoon so I decided to go for a quick walk outside, I rushed out and noticed how affected my walking was and my standing position as well. I swear to God I was walking almost like a monkey by that time.

So after probably like 5 minutes (the pain was getting out of control) I came back to the apartment and I decided to lay down for a bit on my bed, fell asleep and as soon as I woke up I noticed I couldn’t move at all anymore.

Again, after a lot of self massage and laughing (and swearing) at myself I managed to get to the bathroom, took a shower, went back to bed and even though I still had a lot of things to do (all my computers were on) I just couldn’t manage to stay awake so I fell asleep.

There was no gym for me this day.

Fourth Day: Things Getting Out Of Control

Woke up at 5:50am and I immediately shut down the alarm clock.

The prior day I could barely move my arms but this time everything got a lot worse. I couldn’t even reach for the remote controls that were right there in my own bed so I decided to rest a bit until my muscles weren’t so tense but that never happened.

After about half an hour, I suddenly had the urge to go to the bathroom so I kind of “walked” if you can say that in something like a mixture between walking like a monkey and crawling like gollum (character from Lord of the Rings) obviously, in lots and lots of pain.

Managed my way back to the bed and remained there until I said “enough is enough” and I dragged my ass as I could to the office and finally got on my working chair.

My arms aren’t in so much pain like before but today is Friday and when I first worked on them was Tuesday so if you do the math, it has taken me literally four days just to be able to stretch my arms almost like they are supposed to without having excruciating amounts of pain.

As for my legs go, they are completely done.

Can’t stretch them, can’t stand at all, can’t walk, I can rest my feet soles fine on the floor if I’m sitting on a chair but any kind of movement besides that is highly painful.

What has caught my attention is that not even after I’m done running 15 miles without any prior preparation have I felt this sore before.

I have to be almost dying for me to take pills and that’s exactly what I’m having right now, some pain killers and Ibuprofen.

Why I’m Becoming a Guinea Pig Video

If you have the time you can watch this video (it’s long).

And if you don’t have enough time then just skip it and be happy! ;-)

So What Comes Next?

I can’t wait to be able to stand up again, as soon as I can walk a bit I know I’ll be good to start running again and that means right back at the gym too.

I will be a lot more cautious when selecting my weights, I don’t mind going through lots of pain but I do mind not being able to train daily. Two full days not being able to workout is just not acceptable so I need to start training smarter (not harder) and I also need to function properly because even though I make most of my computer work while sitting on my desk, I need to be pain free to move around since I’m a very dynamic person.

I’m always taking short breaks, go up and down the stairs, walk to the mini market that’s about two blocks from here, take out the trash daily, buy water bottles a lot, etc., so I do need to be at least somewhat physically functional around here.

I think that if I can manage to have a very solid mindset in place and connect that to a great physical shape (become healthier) the business side of things will solve itself.

That means no more fears, no more false sense of progress, no more anything of what doesn’t allows me to grow.

As for the positive side of things, I think this will help me build a more magnetic presence, become more attractive (in the sense of friendliness and likeability) and generally speaking I think this will improve my life in every single way.

Let Me Know Your Thoughts!

Do you also work on the areas where you lack the most or do you just focus on improving the business side of things?

Let me know in the comments area okay? Talk soon! ;-)

Second Half of the Year Day: 2013

    Hey Sergio,

I really love this post as it is very personal and valuable all at the same time. I think a lot of people can learn from this, even I got a lot out of this even though I know quite a lot about the the importance of having the right mindset has for our success. Thanks for inspiring and sharing this with us!

Great that you just joined a gym, it feels so much better when doing some exercise daily. You actually just reminded me that I have to start training NOW as well. I haven’t really been doing much lately mostly because I’ve been working so much, but that’s a lame excuse I know. My productivity and things I do online will also improve dramatically if I just get my fitness and health to a top level. To be honest I don’t know why I ever stopped for like 2-3 months, the longest break in my entire life without much training haha.

I completely agree that it always starts with the mindset. I tell my friends and other people I meet who want to start their own online businesses (or anything for that matter) that it all starts with their mindset and beliefs. Before I even know that I could do anything online, I devoted myself to countless of personal development books and went out and practiced a lot of the things in real life. Then I slowly became more and more interested in creating a business around my desired lifestyle. So, like many others I read the 4-Hour Workweek, but it took almost 2 years after that till I finally started to take action towards my goals and dreams in life.

I believe having a strong mindset is essential for achieving success in anything (relative to what you want in life of course), and if you can connect that to a great physical health as you said, your business will also become much better. Even Richard Branson says that so there must be some truth and meaning to it haha ;)

Keep up the really great work my friend, always enjoy reading your posts and watching your videos!

Hey Navid, if I didn’t know what I know now, I would never thought that having the right mindset is actually one of the most important things to have solved when it comes to creating an online business man.

Thank you for the awesome comment man and for watching my video as well, I know how precious time is so I really appreciate you checking the videos out too.

Take care and speak soon Navid! ;-)

PS. I’m almost back on track (I can walk again) so I’m hitting that damn gym from hell again this next week but I’m scared… lol

Great post, Sergio. Haven’t had a chance to watch the video yet. I am often being my own guinea pig. In this case it sounds like you really pushed yourself too hard too fast, but you know what. You’re back at it. Most people give up. Or they don’t push themselves hard enough and get nowhere.

I would really love to join the gym for the weights. I have some really little weights at home that are just way too small. I have also wanted to buy those adjustable dumbbells – because they wouldn’t take up as much space and easy to adjust. I like working out at home or with no one around.

    1. Reply

Hey Carlie, I always mention when people can just get away without watching my videos, particularly when they are really long (like the one on this article) so no biggie!

I’ve seen those adjustable dumbbells before (I think I saw the ones marketed by BeachBody) and I think they are really practical for reduced spaces indeed.

I normally don’t feel comfortable being surrounded with people when I’m trying to workout so I’m still testing when the gym is the most empty in the day.

I don’t care if I have to go there at the hottest time of the day if that means I’m going to workout by myself and feel more comfortable myself.

Thanks for stopping by and it’s really cool that you are considering to do exercise in your place.

Exercise is definitely a great stress reliever and you get healthier at the same time so it’s a win win situation! ;-)

An awesome piece as always Sergio,
And, I’m sorry for everything that happened to you, it will certainly take you a step further. Yea just like Carlie said, i think you overworked yourself.

But the main thing now is that you’re finally up and running and I’m happy for that. And i agree with you on the issue of mindsets.

Our mindsets is really one of the most powerful tool we’ve got which can either make or destroy us depending on the way we use it and what we use it for.

I will also like to start that gym thing because, i also needs some muscle and more strength :) but, i think i will start with going on a road walk first.

Thanks a lot for sharing and, kind regards to your spouse, you both have a splendid week.

BTW: How is your product now, hope it will soon be out?

    1. Reply

Hey Theodore, yeah definitely overworked, probably went too hard on the weight selection.

I recommend you start with baby steps man, going really at it from Day 1 can impact negatively your body but yeah, I’d start ASAP, no excuses!

Thanks for stopping by man, really appreciate it. ;-)

PS. The blogging training is done but I still had a few hiccups with the sales page, currently working on it, I think it will be submitted to CB this week.

    Hi Sergio,

I got that not being able to walk up stairs effect after my first session of tabata. It was only 30 minutes of intense work, but I can now see why the class is only once a week.

You need to get back on the horse and repeat that same work-out or those legs will be forever skinny marathon runners.

    1. Reply

Hey Andrew, I had to google that “tabata” term because I never heard about it before but I like what I see, apparently it’s related to “high intensity interval training” or HIIT for short which is something I actually like as well.

Have you been doing this kind of trainings for a while now?

And lol, I definitely do not want to have skinny marathon legs forever, I’m getting back on the horse for sure man! ;-)

    Hi Sergio,
I totally agree with you, that being healthy has a massive positive impact on the mindset and thus the business.

That you joined a gym is great, I remember the time when I was working out and I loved the muscle hangover. The feeling of having worked out is so great :-)

I’m also a runner (beginning level), but I have strong problems with shin splints. Tried everything from shoes to treadmill analysis. Maybe I’ll switch to biking, once I earn some more money to get a good bike ;-)

Definitely a valuable post and a great example to overcome personal fears. You have the right mindset my friend!

    1. Reply

Hey Jan, sorry to hear about your shin splints, maybe biking or perhaps even swimming can work for you?

I’ve been having a little bit of a knee problem sometimes but I don’t pay too much attention to it, I’d like to think I’ll get stronger and that the problem will dissappear, if it doesn’t well no big deal, I’ll just switch to biking and/or swimming myself.

Thanks for stopping by Jan and for the great message as well.

PS. Your latest post on SEO traffic hacks was fantastic, keep up the good work!

    Hi Sergio,
I’ve had one or two of those gym incidents myself. I couldn’t help but think of this joke as I read about your escapade. Don’t know if you have seen it before, but thought you might could somewhat relate.

Dear Diary, For my birthday this year, my daughter (the dear) purchased a gym membership for me. Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try. I called the local gym and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Belinda, who identified herself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. My daughter seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress.

Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Belinda waiting for me. She is something of a Greek goddess – with blonde hair, dancing eyes and a dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!! Belinda gave me a tour and showed me the machines. I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which she conducted her aerobics class after my workout today. Very inspiring! Belinda was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time she was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week-!!

TUESDAY: I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door. Belinda made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air then she put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile. Belinda’s rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I feel GREAT-!! It’s a whole new life for me.

WEDNESDAY: The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn’t try to steer or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot. Belinda was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members. Her voice is a little too perky for early in the morning and when she scolds, she gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying. My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Belinda put me on the stair monster for LB. Why the Hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators? Belinda told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. She said some other sh*t too.

THURSDAY! Belinda was waiting for me with her vampire-like teeth exposed as her thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn’t help being a half an hour late, it took me that long to tie my shoes. Belinda took me to work out with dumbbells. When she was not looking, I ran and hid in the restroom. She sent another skinny bitch to find me Then, as punishment, she put me on the rowing machine – which I sank.

FRIDAY : I hate that bitch Belinda more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anemic, anorexic little cheerleader. If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat her with it. Belinda wanted me to work on my triceps. I don’t have any triceps! And if you don’t want dents in the floor, don’t hand me the damned barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich. The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher. Why couldn’t it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?

SATURDAY : Belinda left a message on my answering machine in her grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today. Doesn’t she know what a friggin “free day” is? Just hearing her made me want to smash the machine with my planner. However, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel.

SUNDAY : I’m having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD that this week is over. I will also pray that next year my daughter (the little sh*t) will choose a gift for me that is fun – like a root canal or a hysterectomy. I still say if God had wanted me to bend over, he would have sprinkled the floor with diamonds!!

LOL yeah I’ve read this before George and I can relate to some of this with the exception that I continue to put in hard work even when it gets tougher.

As programmers say “you put trash in, you get garbage out” and I’m definitely not a quiter.

Thanks for stopping by man, take care! ;-)

Oh my gosh, Sergio!! I hope by now you are able to walk/run again. I can’t believe that “senior trainer” guy put you through so much. I don’t know anything about going to a gym, but aren’t you supposed to do some kind of stretches or warm ups before you jump right into things?

Good for you for trying to go back and put up with that guy, though – I would have probably not have gone back the next day especially if I was as sore as you were. But, you certainly proved a point in a round about kind of way..lol.

I didn’t watch your video yet, but will do that in a little bit – love watching your videos :)

Keep up the good work and next time maybe take it a bit slower at the gym – ha!

    1. Reply

Hey Linda, yeah I can definitely walk again now LOL I actually ran 12 miles this past Sunday so I’m good!

The idea is that I’m willing to try out new stuff even if I have to go through it myself and not know the consequences. This trainer is definitely not somebody I am going to go back to again (I haven’t gone back to the gym since this happened) I plan to get back this week though but I’ll look for someone else or I’ll create my own routines.

Thanks for stopping by Linda and good luck on your new marketing endeavour with Dean! ;-)

Hey Sergio – Congrats on the Clickbank check! I have over $400 due to me, but they are taking out $1 each week due to no sales :( I think I need 2 or 3 more sales and then hopefully they can cut it to me.

This is a great video, Sergio – I hope everyone watches it!! You gave away some great info in the beginning – the rest is cracking me up..lol. So happy you are running again – I actually did see that ;-)

Next time you definitely need to find a different trainer to work with and if not, doing your own thing is good too. Watch to see what other people are doing – that might help too :)

Thanks for the good luck wishes :)

        Keep the focus!
