First Niche Site Experiment

Never break a promise.

I told you yesterday I was going to speak about a niche site and here it is.

You need to watch the video in order for you to understand what the heck am I talking about though.

So without any further ado, here’s the video!

The Video

By now you should have a really good understanding of what I am going for and even though I have more niche sites to share with you, I want to focus on this one for now.

The Domain

The name of the site I’m going to build, is Guitarra VIP.

Nobody looks out for that term so my domain is not going to get any google love but I’m okay with that.

Anyway, I have been using Market Samurai to see what the most searched keywords are in relation to ‘guitarra’.

I am doing the same research on places like Amazon, eBay, YouTube, etc.

But I don’t want to jump ahead of time either.

Be Different

By now, the only thing I want you to focus on, resides on two things only:

  1. Expertise
  2. Likeability

These are some clues:

  • What are you an expert in?
  • Do you have any hobbies?
  • Are you likeable?
  • Are you fun?

Nobody loves a dull person so if you think you may be boring, you might actually have to step up your game and be more awesome (I’m serious).

You don’t have to wear any stupid lenses like I did on my video though… but you’ll certainly need to have a stronger and more confident voice tone, do what you do best and share it with the world.

Back to the guitar niche site.

Guitarra VIP

So far it has Optimize Press in the background and nothing else.

I want you to go and check it out for yourself.

I’m going to keep OP there but I’m going to install a WordPress Premium theme on top of it so I can get some decent SEO rankings.

I’ll use OP for building the actual paid training course under a subdomain but for now, that’s irrelevant.

When To Monetize It?

Oh by the way, I’m not focusing on money right now.

I want to make it a site that people can feel welcome. A site that should be shareable and a site that gives tremendous value.

The monetization will follow really soon though.

(Besides asking for money is looking desperate and that’s a big turn off. Instead, portrait as you don’t care about it. You WILL get more money like this.)

Enough is Enough

I don’t want to post a super big post on all the things I’m planning to do because I want you to do the same as I’m doing it here, so this is all for now.

I want you to sit back, relax, have a beer and think about what in the world people actually love you for.

And make that your niche site.

Don’t worry about the keywords though.

Be Awesome

If you are an amazing person, people are going to find you no matter what.

Leave the keyword crap for the SEO nerds, it’s not really worth it for you.

Focus on being an amazing dude (or dudette) and the rest will just find its way.

Your Job

Please check out Guitarra VIP right now.

I’m not asking you to just click on it.

I just want you to check that it is a current empty site and nothing else.

I’m uploading the new theme tomorrow, doing the configuration and even posting stuff there for new visitors, I want you to check that it is a current empty site.

And Your Assignment For Today

Just baby steps for now ok?

Decide what you are a rockstar at, and make that as your niche site.

If you are going to give me any “buts” or “I can’t” kind of justifications for not starting a zero BS site, don’t even waste my time.

The world is full of under achievers, we don’t need any more on this place.

So take care and if you are actually willing to start something that matters but don’t know how to do something, TELL me and I will personally help you.

Take care, have fun and be awesome.

Every. Single. Day.

I am not familiar with Optimize Press – what exactly does it do?

Looking forward to seeing your site – hoping I can translate it :)

Optimize Press is the standard when it comes to doing membership sites but you can also use it for sales pages creation and even squeeze pages.

I might do a video on that very soon! ;-)

    HI Sergio,

Loving the glasses, even cooler than nerd surfing glasses!

I totally agree with what you’re saying, create a site because you’re passionate about the subject, attract an audience, and then add the monetization. Don’t create ugly posts for SEO, it will just read poorly and make the visitors, and a site full of banners will make the visitor think WTF this guy is just selling to me and leave your site forever.

Looks like the cold showers are working…

      Hey Andrew,

LOL thank you and glad you understood the point of building an audience first man.

      Speak soon! ;-)

PS. Cold baths really suck but they are totally working indeed! :))

    Hi Sergio,

I couldn’t access your site, but the video was awesome :)

Very interesting info. I still haven’t created a niche site yet, but that’s one of my goals for 2012. So, I’m going to follow all the details you’re publishing.

I have thought a lot about the keyword research regarding google and monetizing. Do you have a plan / strategy for how you’ll get most of your traffic and most of your money from the site?

    1. Reply

      Hey Jens,

Not sure why you couldn’t access the site but I’m glad you were able to watch the video.

The traffic is going to be free, organic and mostly from YouTube. I really can’t wait to get it started.

Thanks for watching and have a great weekend! ;-)

Well, I checked out your and I have improved SkipWorks so it doesn’t have a header either.

HG was doing “Server Maintenance” as the same time I had made some changes to the type in the header and menu display…..went down in the middle of a save “server not found”

Just for the record, like you colors, font type, Facebook app and HEADER (here).

Oh, by the way…..a promise is a promise so your credentials are in the mail.

I still have a lot of work to do, moving my banner ads off the front page etc.
Really liked the way Comments were displayed on the old “Marketing” but will work on that after this Cold Shower Guru I know gets LUV correctly set up for me..

By the way, have a favor to ask. Will you set up a survey on this page and let everyone vote?? Exactly as I have written it please.

Does Sergio’s use of the Infamous “F” word improve this site?
Select: Y for yes, N for No.
    comments limited to 20 words.

      Hey Carolyn,

You know I’m not a common guy so my advice isn’t the most popular thing either. Having a header is not a must-have but it certainly helps in getting people able to recognize your brand.

I’m opening a personal site soon and I don’t plan to have a header at all.

I don’t really believe in banners.

I like the colors and how they look but in my experience, people don’t just arrive on sites and then click on banners.

If they want to support you by buying something from your affiliate links… Believe me, they will find them. (or even ask for them!)

I’d love to run that survey for you but I can’t do that.

I have never asked my visitors to do anything because I don’t want to be pushing them in directions they may not be comfortable with.

      But, I get your point.

Maybe my content is not PG after all but this is me and I won’t sugar coat anything when we are talking about really serious things, like making money and improving a life.

Take care and have a great weekend Carolyn, always love your feedback! ;-)

Just updated the bit that ruined the article for you. ;-)

Tried to visit your niche site, but at the moment it shows a page which says
    “OptimizePress Getting Started Guide”

Anyways, I like the way you hold yourself accountable, have a “sort of a plan” and take actionable steps. Most bloggers who create niche site mainly aim for Google juice and monetization and give content a backseat.

      Hey Shamelle,

Yeah, I was supposed to get started working on the niche site yesterday but something came up and couldn’t do any work.

I’m planning to get started with it ASAP, although I may be a bit slow since I want to record screencasts to show how am I putting it together.

I’m keeping it simple for traffic. The site is about video learning mainly so I’m aiming for YouTube.

I will share everything I do behind that site here so others can follow and as this is still my first niche based site, I’m not sure what is going to happen. But I’ll be it’ll be fun!

Thank you for commenting Shamelle and really nice looking site you’ve got there. Congrats! ;-)

    Hi Sergio,
Time and again I hear people who know what they are talking about tell people who are new to the online business to stand out from the crowd.
    To be different.
    To be memorable.
    To get noticed.
And time and again I see people either take no action at all or just copy what everyone else does.
So it is refreshing that you give the same advice here.
There is a harder edge to you in this blog post and that is good.
If people want to waste their time and not be different and spend all their time worrying about keyword density when they should worry about giving great content in whatever niche they choose to operate in then that is up to them.
They are probably beyond help anyway.
And if you have shoot a video looking like a Mexican version of Elton John to get your message across then so be it.

      Hey Pat,

Totally agree my man, some people ARE (sadly) beyond help.

A mexican version of Elton John LMAO! Thanks I guess. I just wore them because I had them at hand and thought nobody was going to notice them anyway. ;-)

Have a great start of week and speak later Pat!

Hope you had a very nice Easter..
I went to a neighbor’s lots of “kiddies” hunting Eggs.

This “thing” won’t let you leave a two word comment!

      I did, thank you Carolyn!

Seems like you had a good time as well.

PS. The “thing” is a CommentLuv feature to avoid comments like “great post!”. ;-)

That’s awesome man! Hey I’d still like to record a few lessons for you and you can throw a voice over on them, that is if you want! I’ve got quite a bit on my plate at the moment and it looks like you gotta get that site set up first. So down the road let me know and I’ll throw a few lesson videos together on what ever you want or I can do some simple ones for you. I could teach guitar all day long lol. Besides, it will give me a little practice for my English guitar lessons site that I have owned the domain for about 2 years for and still not done a thing with lol.

    1. Reply

Karson my man, always fun to have you around as you’re always working in something.

If you’re really down for some guitar teaching, I would love to do some bits together. I actually asked a few friends of mine to participate on my project but since they already professional guitarists, they asked for money and I’m definitely not paying them, at least not now.

If you want to have your own guitar course, I would love to contribute as well if you’re down for it, just give me this month since I have to fund a trip to las vegas and it’s not going to be easy.

More on that on Monday LOL

Take care bro, always great to have you around here. ;-)

        Hey Sergio,
Absolutely will throw some material your way and I was well on my way to becoming a professional guitarist before I met my wife and decided a life with her was much better then one with a band lol. In all honesty, I really hope after I get my IM stuff going well to start undertaking being a professional musician again. :) Look forward to helping each other out!
Hope you trip works out! I enjoyed Vegas last time I was there.

Awesome feedback bro, looks like there are a few musicians here after all.

Check out Keith Sneed site, he already recorded a video with a Ukelele and a warm humming sound as an intro in his latest video.

And rock on my man, I also want to get back to guitar once this IM thing starts lifting up.

Did you know many known marketers also play guitar? Just from the top of my head, Frank Kern, Ed Dale, Eben Pagan and there are more but I always forget about the rest lol

Anyway, speak soon my man, keep rocking your site and let’s make some stuff happen soon! ;-)
